Deadly Attack Claims Many Lives in Aleppo's Kurdish Sector

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – On Thursday 21 Kurdish civilians were killed in the Aleppo neighbourhood of Sheikh Maksud when Syrian forced shelled an area near the Marouf mosque.

Dozens of others were injured in the attack and a number of homes were destroyed.

This has been the biggest attack on the country’s Kurdish population since the beginning of the anti-government revolution in Syria a year and a half ago.

Activists said the Syrian forces attacked Sheikh Maksud to target a large number of Syrian opposition members and civilians who have taken refuge in the relative safety of the Kurdish populated sector.

“This neighbourhood hasn’t seen any clashes between the pro-Assad forces and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters since the beginning of the revolution,” an activist from Aleppo who preferred to stay anonymous, told Rudaw on Friday. “The regime wants to punish the Kurdish residents for receiving the anti-Assad families who fled their homes due to the mass arrests and the summary executions committed by the pro-Assad’s forces in different neighbourhoods in Aleppo.”

This activist said the attack seems to be a message from the Assad regime to the Kurds not to harbour those who flee the rest of Syria, otherwise “no fighters from the FSA were witnessed by the residents of the neighbourhood of Sheikh Maksud.”

Following the attack, thousands of Kurds gathered in front of the hospital and accompanied the bodies of the victims to the Kerdagh area in the Kurdish city of Efrin, northwest of Aleppo for burial.

Kurdish political activists as well as members of the Kurdish National Council (KNC) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD) attended the funeral, which later turned into large demonstrations against the Syrian regime.

In a statement released on Friday, leaders of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) said, “The Syrian regime will pay dearly for this massacre in Sheikh Maksud.”

“The YPG will not forget the blood of those citizens who lost their lives in the massacre and the units will conduct revenge and counterattacks,” read the statement.

Kurds in Syria haven’t joined the revolution and since July they have run most Kurdish cities where Syrian security and armed forces withdrew voluntarily.

Kurds Declare Autonomy in Syrian Kurdistan

PostAuthor: brendar » Sun Sep 09, 2012 2:11 am

The Kurdish council, an umbra group that gathers Kurdish National Council (KNC)and the Democratic Union Party (PYD,) said on Sunday in the Kurdistan region of Iraq that they have decided to declare an autonomous Kurdistan region in the Syrian Kurdish cities. The West Kurdistan politicians are seeking to establish an autonomous region similar to the South Kurdistan region of Iraq, Mahmoud Mohammed, a member of the council told elaf website.

As Kurds began seizing control of several Kurdish cities on Wednesday following the withdrawal of the Syrian army from the Kurdish areas in the country, the Kurdish political groups sent a message to the Free Syrian Army ( the Arab opposition group) which battles the Syrian regime, that they were not allowed in the Kurdish—populated region.
Syria’s Kurds who have long suffered discrimination under the Assad regime, now have a chance to curve a Kurdish zone in similar to that of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.
Qamishli, which is the largest Kurdish city in Syria and the capital of West Kurdistan, is still under control of Syrian forces, but Kurdish leaders expect the army to pull out of the area to battle the powerful Syrian rebel groups in the other Arab cities including the Damascus.

Well your hand is meant to be tilted towards your face.

Federalism won’t solve Syria crisis: Saleh Moslem

Qamishlo- Democratic Union Party (PYD) co-chair Saleh Moslem rejected federalism would solve Kurdish question in Syria.

Talking to Khabar 24 on Saturday, Moslem said the federal system in the United States is not capable of been applied in Syria as the system is not in line with the realities of the regions in the country.

Addressing federalism problems in Iraq, Saleh said Article 140, especially in the disputed areas has not still been applied, and Qareqin, Kirkuk and Sanjar are still unofficially part of Kurdistan Region’s borders.

He further said federalism would not only solve Syria Kurdish question but also will complicate it more.

He then supported Democratic autonomy as the right option for Syria and said the system will solve Kurdish question and its cultural, economic and political problems.

He further backed Kurdish National Council (KNC) as Syria Kurds umbrella party and PYD will do nothing before consulting KNC.
