As far as I know it is still under Asad's control . Kurds however have free hand in the city and the regime's present is mostly symbolic .

Syrian opposition leader promises constitutional recognition to Kurds

Image

ERBIL, Aug.4 (AKnews)- Abdul-Basit Sayda, the Kurdish chairman of the Syrian National Council (SNC), said the Kurdish issue should be resolved through constitutional recognition of Kurds.

Sayda arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Aug.1 for meeting with Kurdistan's President Massoud Barzani, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu and members of the Kurdish National Council of Syria (KNCS) over the Syrian crisis.

Sayda told a press conference late yesterday evening in Divan Hotel of Erbil that the aim behind his visit to the Kurdistan Region is discussing the current situation of Syria.

Commenting on the concerns of Syrian Kurds about the SNC's recognition of ethnic rights of Kurds, Syada said "the Kurdish issue is part of the general crisis in the country and will be resolved within the national project [of the SNC] and through the constitution.

"We recognize the Kurdish identity and the Kurdish nation should not be oppressed anymore; it should rather be compensated for the past."

A quadrilateral meeting among the Turkish FM, SNC, KNCS and representative of the Kurdistan Region was held and the participants underlined the importance of protecting the territorial unity of Syria, SNC chairman said.

Sayda added the participants in the meeting also supported the national project proposed by the SNC.

He continued "we told the Turkish FM that the Kurdish issue in Turkey should be resolved peacefully and with the settlement of the Kurdish issue in this area the situation of the region will be stabilized."

The official added his meeting with Barzani was to ask Kurdistan president to open Kurdistan's border to all Syrian refugees indiscriminately.

Commenting on reports of sidelining the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) of Syria to Erbil meeting which break up the joint committee of the KNCS and the People's Council of Western Kurdistan (PCWK), Sayda said the issue "is not related to sidelining them because the meeting was for SNC and KNCS."

Turkey regards the PYD affiliate of the Turkish dissident organization, Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed his government will not allow for these "terrorist" parties to control any parts of Syria. However, the two parties currently control some mainly Kurdish areas in Syria.

As for hoisting Kurdistan flag over the liberated Kurdish areas of Syria, Sayda said the act by Kurds is to show the Kurdish identity and does not imply any separatist aspirations of the Kurdish forces.

"No force or political party demand or aspire for separation… Syrian Kurds support the territorial unity of the country," Sayda said.

He continued so far the confrontations between the Free Syrian Army and army of [Bashar] al-Assad's regime in Aleppo continue and the Free Army does not withdraw.

Sayda said "the Syrian regime has lost its legitimacy and internal, regional and international trust…. We support the rebels."

The official was critical of the Iraqi government for deploying army at the borders.

"This is while we expected the Iraqi government to assist the Syrian peoples because the Iraqi nation and the current government endured too much agony under the oppression of the former Iraqi dictator and the government had to understand the issues and anguish of the Syrian peoples."

AKP MPs Advise Turkey Not to Interfere in Affairs of Syrian Kurds

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey – Abdurrahman Kurt, former MP and current member of the ruling Justice and Development Party [AKP] expresses support for the Kurds of Syria and he urges Turkey to see Kurds and Kurdistan as they are.

“I believe the united Kurdish position is something normal and important,” Kurt says. “Turkey should not see the developments there as hostility. Turkey should see the value of Kurds and protect their achievements. If need be Turkey should even become an ally of the Kurds.”

Kurt says that Kurds are an oppressed nation and in order not to suffer in Syria, too, he urges Kurds to act carefully. He mentions the example of the chemical gas attack on Halabja in 1988 by Saddam Hussein’s regime and says that Bashar Assad’s regime can do the same against his Kurds.

“We all know there is the same kind of fascism in Assad and therefore Kurds must be careful,” he says.

Kurt isn’t alone in his support for the Kurds of Syria. Inside his office in Diyarbakir, Kurt and two of his fellow Kurdish MPs from the AKP – Galip Ensarioglu and Cuma Icten-- shared similar views with Rudaw.

Kurt believes that Turkey acting against the achievements of Kurds in Syria, will affect its own stability.

“If Turkey does not protect Kurds, neither Kurds nor Turks will be able to live in peace,” he says. “If Turkey helps Kurds, they will easily become friends.”

MP Ensarioglu believes that peace and stability in Western Kurdistan is intertwined with Turkey and he hopes that Turkey chooses brotherhood with Kurds instead of hostility.

“A hostile attitude harms Turkey’s internal peace,” says Ensarioglu, mentioning Turkey’s past hostility towards the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. “I think Turkey wants Kurds of Syria to join other Syrian opposition groups. Then after the liberation Kurds can demand their rights and discuss autonomy.”

Ensarioglu says that if the Syrian opposition does not meet the Kurdish demand once they come to power, the Kurds will then have the right to take other actions.

Cuma Icten says he does not want civil war and bloodshed in Syria. He also criticizes Syrian Kurds for not joining the Syrian revolution, saying, “Instead of just working for themselves, Kurds in Syria should also work to topple Assad’s regime.”

“Conflict in Syria isn’t in our interest,” he adds. “ We don’t want the borders of our neighbors divided. In the meantime, Assad’s tyranny should come to an end.”

In the end, Itcen does not think Turkey will intervene in Syria because “It doesn’t want its borders with Syria to destabilize.”

Kurdish Supreme Council: We solved the problem.

PostAuthor: brendar » Sat Aug 04, 2012 4:21 pm

A few KNC members of the Kurdish Supreme Council met with Davud Ugly without informing the other PYD members. However, the PYD said they will temporary suspend their joint works until a reason is given for the event. Anyway, the problem is solved and they are back on track.

talk talk talk , that is all SNC do in regard to kurds . They can take their recognition and shove it where the sun do not shine .Where was the recognition of kurds in Antalia and cairo ? All this sweet talk of brotherhood is really annoying .

Keep one thing in mind , More than 99% of them are completely opposed to Kurds having any form of self rule and that is enough to reject any form of dialogue with them .
