ERBIL, July 29 (AKnews) – Leader of the Syrian National Council opposition group, Abdulbaset Seida, has arrived in a surprised visit to Erbil days after a statement by the Kurdistan Region’s President that defected Syrian army soldiers are being trained in Kurdistan so they can defend their territories in Syria.

Seida, a Syrian Kurd, was accompanied by a SNC delegation and is expected to meet with regional President Massoud Barzani and other top officials, a source requesting anonymity told AKnews.

Officials from both the People’s Council and Syria’s Kurdish National Council – two Kurdish forces that do not answer to the SNC - have also arrived in Erbil and meetings brokered by Kurdish regional leaders are expected to be held between the two Kurdish forces and the SNC leader, the source told AKnews.

Seida’s visit comes amid rising concerns in Turkey about a Kurdish controlled region in Syria following a remark by Kurdistan Region’s President Massoud Barzani who said last week that defected Kurds from Syrian army were trained in the region so that they can go back to their country and “fill any security gaps” in the Kurdish territories while Syrian forces retreat from those areas.

Last week, Turkish media also reported that Turkish Prime Minister had ordered Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to visit Kurdistan Region at latest by August 1 to “share Turkey’s sensitivities and determination on this issue” with Kurdish leaders in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Kurdish forces have recently gained control of several towns and districts in the northern parts of Syria close to the Turkish border. One of the two main groups is accused by Turkey of having links with the Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that has been fighting the Turkish state for almost three decades.

Kurdish control of the Kurdish part of Syria set off Turkey’s threats to intervene in Syria if a PKK-linked group retained control in those areas that border Turkey. Turkey fears that a Kurdish controlled area in Syria will open another front for Turkey from where PKK rebels could attack Turkey.

The PYD on the other hand wants a federation with Southern Kurdistan. Meaning that they want something like russia. So they want to have a country with two governments, namely the KRG and the government of western kurdistan.
