The highway between hawler and kirkuk is a never seen before improvement which is a surprise because we had a very hard time back then travelling from kirkuk to hawler with hundreds of holes in the roads. Is that picture really to the end of the kirkuk checkpoints?

I can't really remember where I took the photo as it was 2 years ago. However, I still know that the entire road isn't as good like that (3/4 of the road is good). Especially the last part when entering Kirkuk isn't very good (the road however is entirely double-laned), but they were busy improving the road, so maybe in the near future the whole road will be like that.

When I was there in 2011 I also saw the construction going on to build the big intersection.

What I also would like to mention is that in 2010 the Kirkuk checkpoint was manned by American troops, but when I was there in 2011, the checkpoint was handed over to the peshmerga :)

I didn't know The highway between Slemani and Dokan (and Hawler) was a highway. Thank you! And isn't that the same road as the one they showed in TopGear? When Richard said it was the most beautiful place he seen, something like that.

This is the best project ever it goes all the way till "Prde" (which is 15 mins away from Kirkuk) then its U/C from there till it reachs kirkuk , my dad is there now he said a big over/underpass is u/c on Kirkuk gates both hawler and slemani way , he said where ever you go in Kirkuk roads are U/C and renovation, the current governor is a very good person and is not corrupt at all, last year he spent all the budget allocated to Kirkuk and this year Kirkuk's budget is $50,000,000 ... And in 2012 there will be no old roads left in Kirkuk according to kirkuks governor :D

When you go to Slemani via Kirkuk, the first part of the road is under construction (which is a very big part). When you enter Semani area there is like a 4 laned highway until you get to the city itself

That's right, when you leave erbil you can see that they are working on a big intersection, I think it is called the Koya intersection, but when you enter Kirkuk you will find that they are working on big over/underpasses. The current governor is indeed a good person, because he started all those projects.

yeah Slemani - Kirkuk highway has began but its not even 30% completed and it has started from Slemani , while the Hawler- Kirkuk highway is 85% complete .
