Newroz celebrations
    to be held in Paris
“This year, the Kurdish New Year (Newroz) celebrations will be held in the main building of the Paris municipality,” Omed Koshnaw said in a statement after receiving Ali Dolamari, Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) representative in Paris

They discussed arrangements to make in order to “deepen the friendly relations between the Kurdistan Region and France and gain more support from the French government and people,” the statement added.

Hundreds of thousands of people from the Kurdistan Region, as well as Kurds in Turkey, Iran, and Syria, celebrate Newroz. The event symbolizes freedom from tyranny and resistance. Kurds celebrate Newroz from March 21-23 by picnicking in the countryside and lighting bonfires with family and loved ones. The occasion is known as the Kurdish New Year
Khoshnaw and Dolamari also “discussed the development of relations between Erbil and Paris within the framework of the sisterhood Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] between the two cities,” while also emphasizing “the further development and strengthening of relations between the Kurdistan Region and France.”

In July 2019, the two capitals became sister cities

The relationship between the Kurds and France goes back to the 1980s. Danielle Mitterrand, first lady of France from 1981 to 1995, advocated for Kurds suffering under the regime of Saddam Hussein and was instrumental in campaigning for the no-fly zone that allowed the Kurdistan Region to develop its current autonomy. She was affectionately known as the “Mother of Kurds”, and inaugurated the first Kurdish parliament in 1992.

France was one of the first countries to open a consulate in the Kurdish capital of Erbil after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003 and played a critical role in helping Kurds both in Iraq and in Syria in the war against the Islamic State (ISIS).

Iran tries to prevent Newroz celebrations

Iranian military and security forces have intensified efforts to prevent Newroz (Kurdish New Year on 21 March) celebrations in Kurdish cities, setting up checkpoints and deploying heavily armed units in several locations, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) reported

According to the report, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces today set up checkpoints on the roads leading to the villages of Kani Sorkh and Sengan in Oshnavieh, using vehicles equipped with DShK heavy machine guns, stopping and searching civilian vehicles and interrogating passengers.

Meanwhile, IRGC patrols moved through the streets of Oshnavieh in an apparent attempt to create an atmosphere of fear and deter public gatherings.

Similar measures were reported in Bukan, where IRGC forces stationed along the road to Nowbar village prevented civilians from travelling to Mount Targheh for Newroz celebrations.

Additionally, Kurdish activists and civilians in both Oshnavieh and Bukan were summoned by the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC and the Ministry of Intelligence, where they were warned against organising any non-state-sanctioned celebrations.

In Kermanshah, security services and police exerted pressure and issued threats against organisers of Newroz events in the Darreh Direj neighbourhood in an attempt to prevent the celebrations from taking place.

Despite the heavy presence of law enforcement and security agents, the celebrations continued in the area from midday.

Meanwhile, in Saqqez, Kurdistan Province, Newroz celebrations were held in several parts of the city.

Earlier, Seyyed Sadegh Hosseini, the IRGC commander in Ilam Province, warned Kurdish civilians against celebrating Newroz, saying: “No institution has the authority to issue permits for Newroz celebrations, and we must take a coordinated approach to events that are not in line with our culture.”

He added: “Community elders and believers should ensure that the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan is respected, and anything that contradicts our principles, laws and values must not take place. Identifying the leaders and those active in cyberspace and real-world gatherings is a top priority”.

Despite these pressures, the Newroz celebrations in the city of Malekshahi, Ilam Province, were successfully held on 14 March, with large crowds in attendance.

Newroz celebrations in London
    start with a reception
A Newroz reception was hosted by Hackney Council, which is a district in London with a large Kurdish population

The reception, held at the municipal building in partnership with the Kurdish and Turkish Community Center, was attended by Hackney Council Leader Caroline Woodley, Mayor Heila Suso-Rung, and the UK’s first Kurdish female Minister for Technology, Feryal Clark Demirci, along with businesspeople and numerous members of the Kurdish Community Center.

At the reception, in which Kurdish women and youth attended in traditional Kurdish attire, participants were served traditional Kurdish dishes.

The speeches at the reception highlighted the importance of Newroz in Kurdish history. It was noted that by celebrating Newroz in London, the Kurdish people uphold their identity and culture. Additionally, speakers highlighted that this celebration reflects the Kurdish people's commitment to FREEDOM and their peaceful character.

Mayor Heila Suso-Rung stated that Newroz symbolizes the arrival of spring and a 'new day' emphasizing that the Kurdish people celebrate this day as a day of freedom and hope.

Suso-Rung stated that Newroz is an integral part of Kurdish culture and history, emphasizing that the Kurdish people celebrate it within the framework of their struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Suso-Rung highlighted that the Kurdish community in Hackney holds a significant place in terms of their contributions and cultural presence. She also expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the Newroz reception.

Newroz is more than just a celebration

Heval Mila, speaking on behalf of the Kurdish People's Assembly, stated that Newroz is not only the arrival of spring but also a festival of renewal, resistance, and hope. He emphasized that it symbolizes the unshakable spirit of communities that have stood shoulder to shoulder against hardships for centuries.

Mila said, "Newroz is not merely a 'celebration.' It is a powerful reminder of solidarity, unity, and the collective struggle for a better future."

Clark Demirci: We are preserving our identity

UK Minister for Technology, Feryal Clark Demirci, said that her family moved to Hackney, London, as a Kurdish family 40 years ago and that despite the great challenges Kurds have faced, they have preserved their language and identity and are now celebrating Newroz.

Demirci emphasized the significance of celebrating Newroz as hosted by Hackney Council and expressed her gratitude to those who organized the reception, particularly acknowledging Hackney Council Leader Caroline Woodley.

Caroline Woodley, in turn, expressed her pride in having organized the Newroz reception alongside the Kurdish community, highlighting the social, cultural, and economic contributions Kurds have made to the city.

Suna Alan ignites the spirit of Newroz with her songs

At the reception, artist Suna Alan took the stage, performing Newroz songs and reflecting on how these songs tell the story of struggle and liberation in the Kurdish experience. As her passionate Newroz melodies filled the room, Kurds and their allies held hands and danced halay, singing along in a shared moment of unity and celebration.

Over 2,000 torches ready for Newroz

The town of Akre in Duhok province, considered the capital of Newroz, has prepared over 2,000 torches for the festival with tens of thousands expected to flock to the area to celebrate, its district mayor said Saturday

“Newroz preparations in Akre started more than a month ago. Most of the preparations have been made and will be completed two days before Newroz,” Dilawar Bozo, Akre’s district mayor, told Rudaw. “More than 2,000 torches have been prepared.”

With Newroz falling in the holy month of Ramadan this year, Bozo said that celebrations will be different. “We will have different activities, and artists and religious singers will participate in the ceremony.”

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani will also participate, and a large tent and suhoor - the meal consumed by Muslims before fasting during Ramadan - will be prepared, according to Bozo.

Kurds from all over the Kurdistan Region traditionally gather in the town of Akre to honor the ages-long tradition of lighting fires to welcome the New Year on the first day of spring.

Hundreds of thousands of people from the Kurdistan Region, as well as Kurdish regions in Turkey, Iran, and Syria, will celebrate the eve of Newroz on Thursday, also symbolizing a day of freedom from tyranny and resistance
“This year we have built another road to the mountain, one that goes up and one that goes down, but in two different directions,” Bozo added, predicting that over 70,000 tourists will visit for the festival.

Kurds celebrate Newroz on March 21-23 by picnicking in the countryside and lighting bonfires with their families and loved ones. The occasion is known as the Kurdish New Year.

Celebrations and festivities are held across the Kurdistan Region with hundreds of thousands of Kurds dancing in their colorful and traditional Kurdish clothes.
