Yale University to Host Event

on Kurdish Genocide

The MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University is set to host a special event titled “History & Legacy of the Kurdish Genocide” on Wednesday, April 23, as part of its Genocide Studies Program

The event will feature a dedicated video address from Kurdistan Region Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, highlighting the importance of remembering the atrocities committed against the Kurdish people and preserving their historical memory.

Panel discussions will focus on key aspects of Kurdish history and remembrance, including the history of Kurdish identity, Kurdish memory politics, and “Archiving after Anfal: Preserving Memory & Identity.”

Scholars and experts will explore how documentation and collective memory play a role in preventing the erasure of past crimes and in supporting justice for victims.

The Kurdish genocide refers to a systematic campaign by Saddam Hussein’s Ba’athist regime in the 1980s aimed at annihilating the Kurdish population in Iraq.

The most notorious part of this campaign was the Anfal operations (1987–1988), during which an estimated 180,000 Kurds were killed, thousands of villages were destroyed, and tens of thousands were forcibly disappeared

The campaign included chemical attacks such as the one on Halabja in March 1988, which alone killed around 5,000 civilians.

In 2010, the Iraqi Supreme Court officially recognized the Anfal campaign as genocide.
